Monday Musings

I'd like to start this post off with a letter...

Dear Monday,

You are my least favorite day of the week. You basically crash my weekend party uninvited with a slap to the face. I do appreciate your gift of the complimentary all-day pass on the struggle bus. Rest assure, I am putting it to good use.

I don't love you. So, I'll choose to close with a Sincerely.

Rachael

My schedule is 50 shades of insanity these days... I am finding it hard to make time for me.. I miss blogging.. How can I make it more of priority into my hectic life? How do some of my favorite bloggers have the time to work or be amazing moms (or both), cook delicious food, post terrific
posts?

I know I need to cut back on my schedule... how do even you say "No"? I come from a please of "Yes" and I feel like "No" is a let-down... I have no problem telling my students, "No." In fact, I'm basically a professional at that..

In addition to a packed schedule, here are few things that are also on my NO BUENO list...

1. I cracked my iPhone screen on Thursday.. $95 later, it's fixed. Do me a favor, and go flush your toilet.. that was the sound that I heard in my head when my card was swiped.

2. My favorite Starbucks that I go to (It's in the hospital of Lourdes Hospital) is closing on Saturday. The contract ran out and Starbucks chose not to renew, so now they are going to be a Coffee Beanery? Like, really? Cheapest form of therapy is that Starbucks, with those Baristas.

With all that negativity out of the way, here's a positive list on this less-than-desireable Monday.

1. Mom and Gramman have been in town for the weekend. They leave tomorrow, but they are in route to school, as I type this with ,Chic-fila in tow for a lunch date.

2. Mom fixed my front door. She's like Macguyver. I haven't been able to lock-it for the past few weeks.. dangerous, I know.. don't remind me.. My story would have been a Made-for-TV lifetime movie.

3. I made homemade mayo yesterday... One batch yielded me three flavors: garlic cilantro, old bay and curry. I'm planning on during the Whole 30 again, so this domestic accomplishment is going to spice my food options up for the next month.

4. Ombre hair part deux will be going bye bye on Saturday morning (The sun made it come back with a vengence). I'll also be getting a massage that afternoon and will be going to see Bruno Mars again on Saturday Night... Oh, how I love the Moonshine Jungle.

5. I've been selected to be a star with Paducah's "Dancing with Our Stars" event.. I blogged about attending the event here. To say I'm excited is an understatement. I'll be taking ballroom classes, a routine will be choreographed for me and my dance partner and I'll spend the next 5 months mastering it. That's only 1/3 though, the other 2/3 is actually fundraising for the event (sponsorships, auction items, monetary donations). The event is Lourdes Hospital's Relay for Life team's fundraiser. Last year, they raised over $230k, making them one of the Top 4 Relay for Life teams in the the globe.

6. I bought some tulip bulbs, daffodils, some gardening gloves and a metal bulb planter... I'm planning on planting them... when? I'm not sure.. but it'll have to happen in the next few days.

Alphabetical Advice

For those that read my blog regularly (sorry, I've been slacking lately.. I am trying to begetter about organizing my life... #fail) I was really excited about being able to teach a Creative Writing class. The kids that are occupying my classroom real estate have stories to tell.. many of them have explored their vulnerability in the pages of their notebooks, and have even given those words a voice by reading aloud in class... It's been a pretty powerful experience...

Anyways... one of their assignments was Alphabetical Advice, where they had to give advice either in general, on a certain topic or to a certain group of people.. and I thought I'd share mine..

Ambition is an aphrodisiac.
Be a Limited Edition.
Choose Happiness.
Don't settle for less than you deserve.
Embrace change.
Flexibility is key.
Give yourself the chance to fail.
Heart-to-Hearts with your besties are essential.
Ice Cream for dinner is acceptable.
Jogging burns calories. It's okay to eat a cupcake.
Keep it real. Authenticity is hard to find.
"Let it Marinate"  --> This is a make-up tip from drag queens.. it refers to letting your foundation sit before you powder.
Make No excuses.
Never put your happiness into another person.
Open your heart to new possibilities.
Perfect boys only exist in movies or in the pages of a book.
Queen status. Princess status is for little girls, not sophisticated women.
Reward yourself.
Starbucks cures everything.
Tears can be cleansing..but be warned, too much makes you look like Quesimodo.
Understand the value of your self-worth.
Vulnerability is scary. Be brave and do it anyway.
Who cares what anyone else thinks?
Xanthippes are not good role models..   Note: A xanthippe is pronounced "San-thip-pee". It's like a shrew or a nagging wife.
YOLO should never come out of the mouth of someone you date, after the age of 23.
Zero in on your goals.

What would your alphabetical advice be?

It's been too long.... way too long...

Where, oh where, do I even begin? Clearly, it's been way too long.

Since my last post, I trekked to Oxford, MS to Ole Miss with Kiki La Rue for a conference. The land of Hotty Toddy, which let me be the first to tell you... it's not a dance move... While there we hit up a Goodwill and it was a gold mine - filled some fabulous finds.. I scored a fantastic Oscar de la Renta blazer for $5. People in Oxford know how to dress... here's an example from the uber stylish doctoral student that set up the conference... like... he had a tiny flower lapel with it's own little water vase thing...

One of the events at the conference was a reading at an eclectic bookstore..which, confession.. I love the smell of books.. I wish I had more time to read.

No caption needed.
I love a cleverly packaged gum. My favorite of the bunch? The Supermodel Meal.

For 2 weeks, Kiki La Rue got our inner band geek on, by working our tails off as color guard instructors for the Marching Band.. luckily, there was a cold front, so it didn't give anyone an early taste of the devil's fiery lair..although some of those kiddos, definitely need to start changing their ways... I also found out, that on top of having Rosacea, I am essentially allergic to the sun's UV rays. I was diagnosed with Polymorphic Light Eruption Syndrome.. so, yeah.. perhaps, why I've been unlucky in love lately. Clearly, I need to find a vampire to date. I'll blog more about that later (not dating vampires, the sun allergy..)

My last weekend before school started, I trekked to Elizabethtown/Louisville where I surprised Mom and had tea at the tearoom with Gramman before celebrating one of my best friend's "Dirty 30" birthday. There's whole separate post to come on that, but we embarked on a Taste of Louisville tour and had so much FUN. I must confess though, that although I am a fan of Louisville, I do not particularly care for Bourbon.. In fact, here's my reaction with the birthday girl, Alex.

Sipping Bourbon, anyone?
Yeah... not really our thing... Pretty gross, actually. I'm almost positive that it made my esophagus grew hair.
School snuck up on us, and before we knew it, Summer was officially over and we were back to the  daily grind. Kids started back last Wednesday and we were out of school on Friday...  Truthfully, I had no idea why were out.. Friday was apparently the date of the Emancipation... and I thought my sweet African-American kiddos were playing a joke on me.. like I've lived in a lot of places and this "holiday" was a first... I honestly thought it was to give students time to get school supplies.. yeah, no.. Paducah celebrates the Emancipation with a holiday... #teacherfail

Wednesday Wishes - Strictly This Week's Edition

It's been a few weeks since I linked up with sweet Anne over at Love the Here and Now. But since I'm back to blogging, it's only appropriate that I get back to business..so let's #keepcalmandlinkon shall we? and I suppose I'll be realistic with my wishes this week, although realistically I do wish that money grew on trees.. I would convert my whole casa into a green house full of those currency yielding plants.

I have a dentist appointment on Thursday, and I missed Truth Tuesdays to admit this fact...but I am not a fan of the dentist. I had a really horrible experience a while back and it has caused an aversion... but now I'm afraid of cavities and shiz, so I'm sucking it up and going.. Luckily, I'm part of the Murder Mystery Troupe with the dentist I'll be going to.. and the man in the Hawaiian lei is hilarious.. here's a selfie he took with another co-star on my phone during our last show together.

I pretty much adore him and I know he'll put me at ease with my dentist anxiety... Side note: Did you know that in Elizabethan England people went to the dentist and it was a deadly decision...like primitive tools with no anesthesia..loss of blood = RIP.. dentists  would also pull teeth and try to replace them with cadaver teeth, random homeless people teeth or animal teeth #nerdalert #ew

So, Wish #1 would be to please not have any cavities... but if I have to have any, please let the number not be divisible by 2 or 3.

Cheer Camp starts on Thursday.. I'm not sure how it is in other states but in KY there are two weeks where you basically have NO to minimal contact with your student athletes and they can't officially convene for conditioning/practice/competition...it's called "dead period." Needless to say, I have been missing my cheer babies like crazy and can't wait to have contact back. Our private cheer camp starts on Thursday with former University of Kentucky cheerleaders, and I just can't wait to be with my girls again #coachingprobs

So, Wish #2 would be for my sweet cheer babies to work hard and get a lot out of their 3-day camp sans injuries and a Niagara Falls of tears.

Albeit not by choice, it's no secret that I'm single again and truthfully, I would be lying if I said that I didn't miss Bombay, I really do, but ain't nobody got time to sit around and wallow. I'm definitely not ready to jump into another relationship; so right now, I'm focusing on myself and am enjoying life, getting my flirt on and am doing things like... going out on blind dates...like...tomorrow, but it's not a traditional blind date, since I vaguely remember him from college..so, it's not technically "blind" since he was part of Greek Life too at Murray and we've had a few convos via text. We can still classify it as such, right?

So, yeah... Wish #3 is that the evening is enjoyable, with delicious food (which I'm banking on..I think we're going to one of my favorite restaurants, Shandies... Their bacon gouda meatloaf is the shiz) and some good company. Oh, and that he's not a creeper.. you never know with some people.
